Though I’m not a Bible scholar nor am I a theologian, I noticed that Scripture usually talks about God’s mighty right hand but rarely about God’s hands, or left hand, as if God has one hand. I believe that God has both hands, but He uses the saving might of His right hand only on special occasions. It’s like that special treatment we get from our parents when we know we have totally crossed the line. Also, similar to when someone says, “Trust me, you don’t want to meet that other side of me.” I believe God is loving and long-suffering, but when it’s time for Him to vindicate His people, there is a side of Him that no one desires to experience. The interesting part is that God doesn’t always announce that He’s going to use His mighty right hand until He does, and the proof will be in the pudding. Some of us might be facing challenges in our lives right now where no family members, besties, or even our spouse can help because it will take the saving might of God’s right hand to get us out.
Before we go any further with this topic, let’s consider some instances in the Bible that tell us about God’s mighty right hand and when He usually uses it. If we examine, for example, in Deuteronomy 7: 19, what Moses told the Israelites when God was about to drive out nations before Israel. But even before that, let’s see what Moses told the new generation of Israelites in Deuteronomy 6:21, as a reminder of God’s mighty hand, “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.” And now let’s go back to Deuteronomy 7:19 to find out what else Moses told the people. “You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.”
Another example we have is in Exodus 15: 6, “Your right hand, O Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, O Lord, shattered the enemy.” The psalmist David said in Psalm 20: 6, “Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of His right hand.” Another example of this is also in Psalm 138: 7, which says, “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me.” we can see that there is a pattern of God’s right hand showing up in times of danger or when His children deals with enemies that are too strong for them. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand.” Here, we see that God’s righteous right hand also strengthens and sustains the just.
The Bible says in Mark 16: 19, “After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them (His disciples), He was taken up into heaven, and He sat at the right hand of God. So, Jesus sitting at His Father’s right hand represents authority and power. Lastly, in Acts 7:55, it says, “But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.” Here, Jesus standing at the right hand of God also indicates authority and power. So, throughout Scripture, we see that God’s mighty right hand is not to be played with. Therefore, I believe there are some battles where God will ask us to collaborate with Him, but there are other battles where God Himself will step in, especially those that have us backed up against the wall. Let us not forget that we serve a God who can destroy a whole city and see about the damages later just for the sake of one of His children. That is why the Bible says in Psalm 105:14-15 that“He (God) reproved kings for their sakes, saying, touch not mine anointed and do my prophets no harm.” Also, an example we have in the Bible is when Miriam criticized and gossiped about her brother, Moses, God’s chosen leader, because he married a Cushite woman. And the anger of the Lord burned against her and Aaron. As a result, Miriam’s skin became as white as snow with leprosy (Numbers 12).
There is a verse in the Bible I stumbled upon not too long ago that blew my mind, and I received a revelation about it. It’s in Isaiah 34:16, which says, “For it is His mouth that has given the order, and His Spirit will gather them together.” Here, this verse emphasizes the certainty of God’s Word when He speaks. Has this ever happened to you before when God told you He would do something for you or deliver you from something; however, from the outside looking in, you saw no way out or how He would do it? Then, suddenly, or one day when you least expect it, God shows up with His mighty hand and pulls you out or delivers you from your predicament as if you were never bound in the first place. Why is that? It is because His mouth has given the order, and His Spirit will bring it to pass. So, God chooses to tell you what He will do because He is being nice to you. The reality is, when God speaks to you, He doesn’t speak to you primarily; His Spirit is already appointed to bring about your deliverance because His Word is final. Remember, it is “Not by might nor by power but by My Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.” (Zechariah 4:6). Therefore, no devil in hell can stop what He says about you and what He wants to do for you. And if He must use His mighty right hand against your enemies, He will do so lavishly, just like He blesses lavishly.
Jesus warned us about the enemy of our souls. He said that his agenda is to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10). However, we must never forget that Jesus has all authority, which means that He has the power to kill, destroy, and take back everything the enemy has stolen from His people.
Therefore, we can totally rely on the saving might of God’s right hand even when facing great adversities.
SCRIPTURES
“Do not be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28.
“Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things! The Lord’s right hand is lifted high; the Lord’s right hand has done mighty things! I will not die but live and will proclaim what the Lord has done.” Psalm 118: 15-17.
